What comes to your mind when someone says “I’m painting”? Is he or she just painting a wall or painting (drawing) on a wall? One is work and the other is art.
Painting – Work or Art
Although you can paint a wall with a piece of art, painting the wall with different colors does not make art.
According to Merriam-Webster
To paint means:
“To apply color, pigment, or paint to” (a solid surface)
And painting is:
“The art or occupation of painting”
So when painting is not your occupation, anything you paint is an art? It’s still not clear, but we all know the difference. One is artistic painting and the other is simply painting.
I’m not here to discuss either format of painting. I’m here to give you information about the tools that are used in the two formats.
Painting Tools and Supplies
All you need to paint are brush, paint and a surface to paint.
I wish it was that simple.
Some basic tools used for both types of painting are similar, like brush, paint, etc. Their dimensions, quality, and other characteristics are different. For your artistic drawing, you might need a very fine artist brush. But to paint a house with the same tool will take you days or even months, you will also need a lot of brushes.
There are some tools with which you can accomplish both.
Work Painting Tools
Brush, paint, paint roller, paint sprayer, paint scraper, etc.
Paint Sprayers Types
There are different types of paint sprayers from many different manufacturers. There is a huge variety of them. Which one to use depends on what type of paint you are using, the kind of surface you are working on, and how detailed finish you want.
- Airless paint sprayer
- Air-assisted paint sprayer
- HVLP (high volume low pressure) paint sprayer
- LVLP paint sprayer
Paint Gun Types
Then you have to choose from the types of paint guns to go with the sprayer and surface you are working on.
- Gravity feed
- Siphon feed and
- Guns without any cups
There are many accessories used in painting jobs. Not all are necessary for every project. But it’s good to know what’s out there to make your job easier.
Sander, caulk gun, pressure washer, step ladder, extension pole, stool, toolbox combo, compressor, screwdriver, hammer to pull nails, putty knife, multi-purpose painter’s tool, razor knife, bucket, sanding sponge, dust mask, drop cloths, hand masker and blade, respirator, rags, spray tip nozzle, masking tape, vacuum cleaner and many more.
Preparing a site for paint, in many cases, takes longer than the actual paint job. Cleaning, filling the holes or gaps, remove obstacles or sensitive items, apply masking tape, laying drop cloth, sanding, and so on. More about this later.
A solution consisting of DiHydroxyAcetone (DHA) is sprayed on your body so that it looks like you had a tan. An HVLP type of paint sprayer is used so a soft layer of the solution is spread on your body without hurting your sensitive skin.
Art Supplies – Drawing tools
You don’t need a wide variety of tools for your artistic project but, boy, there are a wide variety of pencils for different painting style. The number of colors is about the same for both types of painting. And as for the types of canvases, you can draw everywhere you can paint.
Pencil, brush, paint, easel, canvas, sprayers, or other painting surfaces, palette knife, etc.
Airbrushes for fine art, nail art, temporary tattoos, cake decorating, hobbies, crafts, auto graphics, etc.
